Description :
Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu&W. C. Cheng: a gymnosperm in the family Taxaceae. Fallen leaves and trees, with small branches usually opposite and drooping. Leaf shape, interactive technology paired, false two column feather like compound leaf shape, 1-1.7 cm long, with 4-8 stomatal lines on both sides below. Monoecious plant. The cone is drooping, nearly spherical, slightly with 4 edges, 1.8-2.5 cm long, and has a long stalk; Seed scales are woody, shield shaped, with 5-9 seeds per scale. The seed enterprise is flat and surrounded by narrow wings.
There were about 6-7 species of Metasequoia in the Mesozoic, Cretaceous, and Cenozoic eras. In the past, we thought we were already extinct. In 1941, plant researchers discovered the problem in Moudao Town, Lichuan, Hubei Province (at that time, Modaoxi, Wanxian, Sichuan Province, China). This technology is famous for its cultural heritage and ancient national relict tree species. According to recent investigations, giant trees dating back over 300 years have been discovered in Wanzhou, Shizhu County, Lichuan, Hubei, Longshan, and Sangzhi in Hunan.
Metasequoia has strong adaptability and prefers moist growth. It is cultivated in various places south of Beijing. The material of light water spruce is known as a "living fossil". It is of great significance for the study of ancient plants, ancient climate, ancient geography and geology, as well as the systematic development of gymnosperms.
A water fir seed station and seed orchard have been established in Lichuan City, Hubei Province. The management of mother trees has been strengthened, and more than 5000 trees have been planted in batches. Protective measures such as building stone embankments, repairing tree holes, opening drainage ditches, and preventing pests and diseases have been taken to accelerate the pace of seedling cultivation and afforestation. The water spruce in Longshankou and Shizhu has been included in the protection list. The natural regeneration ability of Metasequoia is weak, and special attention should be paid to protecting the seedlings, promoting their growth, and avoiding the remaining Metasequoia forest from being replaced by other tree species.
