Although there are seven different organizations in North America to manage the classification of pine wood, they are all voluntarily carried out under the guidance of the American Wood Standards Committee. Under this guidance, these institutions have established standards for pine wood in the overlapping regions of North America. The Department of Extension Services at the University of Missouri states that cork wood can be classified into several categories. Each of these categories contains several grades of wood. From construction projects to furniture, interior decoration, lightweight frames, wooden decks, and more, various grades of pine wood can be found.

The selected pine wood defined by the Northeast Timber Manufacturers Association includes grades C and D. C-grade is a high-grade pine wood commonly used for fine woodworking and interior decoration. The appearance of selected D-grade pine wood is not as good as that of C-grade, but it maintains similar structural quality. The low requirement of Select C only allows for one and a half inch knots every 4 feet of surface area. Select Class D allows for a tight half inch knot per foot of surface area.

Pine wood is divided into four grades. They are advanced, surface treated, standard, and industrial categories. The finishing grade is defined as wooden boards with exquisite appearance and tight knots. The premium grade is similar to the decorative grade, but it contains larger knots in the wooden board. The standard grade is mainly used for buildings with acceptable finished board shortage. The industrial grade is low grade. As long as the board remains structurally sound, it can give the board knots and any other size features. Compared to the selected grade, these grades of wood allow for larger and more frequent knotting, and the texture of the wood is typically rougher.

The appearance grade of pine wood uses standard grade wood, but there are other restrictions on the allowed functions in the board. The appearance grade board usually comes from the standard grade board. This type of wooden board is mainly used for construction purposes and has a greater degree of knotting compared to finer grades of pine wood. This level allows knots, up to two-thirds of the width of the wooden board, depending on the type of knot. It also allows for splitting into twice the width of the board, but less than one sixth the length of the board. The appearance grade wood exceeds these requirements, but the wooden board may vary depending on the specific requirements it exceeds.

Architectural grade boards are only standard grade pine boards and have not been cut into appearance grade. All parts in this category must meet the low requirements of standard grade wood. These requirements include limiting the size and frequency of wormholes to allow for one mesopore every 2 linear feet. Building grade pine boards do not limit the degree of combustion of machines on the board, and have low requirements for initial and advanced attenuation. Depending on the type, the limit for building grade ranges from two-thirds to one-half of the board width. Unlike exterior grade pine, building grade pine is unlikely to exceed its lower requirements.

The stud grade of square pine wood used in construction is a general classification for wood with vertical load-bearing capacity. The grade of bolted wood is from grade 1 to grade 5. Each grade of stud wood usually belongs to one of the other grades of wood. The definition of stud grade pine wood is the limitation on the quality of wood that affects its strength and structural quality. The use of stud grade wood severely limits the number of warp threads, as well as the size and frequency of cracking, opening, and knotting of pine boards used as studs.
