What is TOC?

　　Total organic carbon is a term used to describe organic (carbon containing) pollutants in water systems. Due to organic compounds such as sugar, sucrose, alcohol, petroleum, PVC binders, plastic derivatives, etc., there are many sources of organic pollutants. There may be organic matter in the water supply in the purification and distribution system, and filtration or component detachment may produce organic matter. Microorganisms that may be produced in the water system may also produce organic matter.

Why measure TOC?

　　Under normal circumstances, organic pollutants are non-ionic and cannot be detected by standard conductivity measurements. Therefore, high resistivity (low conductivity) measurements in ultrapure water systems may not detect significant TOC contamination. If the concentration of TOC is too high, the efficiency of the water purification system will decrease and the yield of semiconductors will be reduced. The contamination of drug batches will damage power and steam equipment. TOC is used to monitor the water quality and equipment efficiency of many water purification processes.
