The low-voltage system of offshore oil platforms is very different from that of onshore power systems. It belongs to the neutral point ungrounded system. In the event of a single-phase grounding fault, the system allows normal operation with the fault for 2 hours to ensure that important electrical equipment at sea will not be immediately shut down. Nowadays, most offshore platforms use insulation monitoring devices to monitor the insulation condition of the system. When there is a fault, an alarm is issued, but it cannot detect which load in the system has an insulation fault. Platform electrical personnel need to cut off the low-voltage load circuits on site one by one for fault diagnosis, which brings great difficulties to the search for grounding faults. The low-voltage power grid system of offshore oil platforms belongs to an independent power grid system. In order to ensure platform production, the low-voltage system of the platform cannot be shut down due to insulation failure of a certain load. Therefore, the 0.4kV low-voltage power system of the platform adopts a neutral point insulation system. The characteristic of a neutral point insulation system is that when a single-phase grounding occurs, the voltage and phase between each phase remain unchanged, and the balance of the three-phase system is not disrupted, so it can continue to operate in a short period of time. However, if operated with faults for a long time, it can cause phase to phase short circuits, or when single-phase arc light is grounded, the system will resonate and cause overvoltage, which will put a lot of pressure on the platform production.
Nowadays, most oil platforms are equipped with insulation monitoring devices.
