Composite overhead ground wire (OPGW): OPGW is the process of integrating optical fibers into the overhead ground wire of a transmission line, designing and installing them simultaneously with the overhead ground wire, and completing the installation in one go.
OPGW "is the abbreviation for optical fiber composite overhead ground wire. It adds optical fibers while maintaining all the performance and functions of the original overhead ground wire, opening up a high-performance optical transmission channel and enabling it to have both lightning protection and communication functions. Therefore, OPGW not only meets the mechanical and electrical characteristics of overhead ground wires, but also needs to meet the transmission characteristics. OPGW is mainly composed of cable cores containing optical fibers and twisted metal single wires, which are generally used in high-voltage power lines in three types of structures: aluminum tube type, aluminum skeleton type, and steel tube type.
The installation design of OPGW should consider the coordination with wire stress, sag, and edge clearance, and its load should not exceed the allowable range of use of the current tower and foundation. Therefore, the characteristic curve of the selected OPGW should be calculated based on its main technical parameters, and the layout, appearance, and installation drawings of the junction box, various fittings, and accessories should be designed in combination with the actual engineering situation.
1. Treatment of initial elongation
For the treatment of initial elongation of OPGW, the cooling method can be used, which involves reviewing the aluminum steel ratio of OPGW and referring to the cooling values of similar conductors or ground wires to handle its initial elongation.
2. Design of anti vibration measures
Among the fittings used in conjunction with OPGW, the tension clamp is of the pre twisted wire type, and the suspension clamp is equipped with pre twisted wire and rubber pads. These two fittings have a certain degree of anti vibration capability. To further enhance the anti vibration capability, it is possible to consider installing anti vibration hammers, which are generally calculated based on the span:
When the span is ≤ 300M, install an anti vibration hammer;
When the span is greater than or equal to 300M, install two vibration dampers.
3. Precautions for OPGW construction and installation
The construction and installation of OPGW is different from ordinary steel strands, and attention should be paid to preventing damage to avoid affecting the performance of optical fibers in the future. Special consideration should be given to the torsion, micro bending, local radial pressure outside the wire clamp, and pollution of optical fibers in OPGW. Therefore, effective measures should be taken during the construction phase to address the following issues:
(1) Prevent OPGW from twisting
Install balance hammers and anti twist devices on the walking board and tensioning clamps;
Using special double groove pulleys;
Adopting a tension defense line machine with dual winches;
(2) Prevent and reduce micro bending and stress of OPGW
Sharp angles are not allowed (control small bending radius of 500mm);
The diameter of the OPGW cable reel should not be less than 1500mm;
The diameter of the pulley should be more than 25 times the diameter of the OPGW, generally not less than 500mm; the inner side of the pulley should have nylon or rubber pads to prevent scratching the surface of the OPGW;
Suitable traction wires and pay off fittings;
Specify the overall length of the OPGW as 6000M to prevent the number of times it passes over the pulley;
Limit the turning angle of the continuous laying line to ≤ 30 °. Within a tension section of the laying line, the direction of the OPGW after the turning angle should be in the shape of a "C";
(3) Control of tension in unwinding:
Adopting hydraulic tension unwinding machine and traction machine with tension release device;
Limit the wire laying speed to ≤ 0.5 meters per second;
(4) Prevent fiber optic pollution
Attention should be paid to encapsulating the ends during the construction and installation of OPGW;
In addition, before the OPGW arrives at the site and is installed, the optical fiber splicing should be carried out after the installation is completed, and after the completion of the entire line construction, the optical fiber attenuation acceptance test of the OPGW should be conducted on site in a timely manner.

OPGW optical cables are mainly used on 500KV, 220KV, and 110KV voltage level lines. Due to factors such as power outages and safety, they are often applied on newly built lines.
The applicable characteristics of OPGW are:
(1) Lines with high voltage exceeding 110kV have a large span (usually above 250M);
(2) Easy to maintain, easy to solve for line crossing problems, and its mechanical characteristics can meet the requirements for large line crossings;
(3) The outer layer of OPGW is metal armor, which has no effect on high-voltage corrosion and degradation;
(4) OPGW must be powered off during construction, and the losses caused by power outages are significant. Therefore, OPGW should be used in the construction of new high-voltage lines above 110kV;
(5) In the performance indicators of OPGW, the larger the short-circuit current, the more it is necessary to use good conductors for armor, which correspondingly reduces the tensile strength. However, in the case of a certain tensile strength, to increase the short-circuit current capacity, the only way is to increase the metal cross-sectional area, resulting in an increase in cable diameter and weight, which poses a safety issue for the strength of the transmission tower.
