Description :
Fiberglass flanges are commonly used for medium and low pressure pipelines and vessels with a pressure not exceeding 3MPa. The main structural forms include integral flanges, bonded flanges, and loose flanges.
The advantage of fiberglass flange is that the flange ring and cylinder are formed as a whole, and the reinforced glass fiber and fabric are continuous, which can fully utilize the high strength and easy forming characteristics of fiberglass. Its disadvantage is that the equal wall thickness structure does not match the stress distribution inside the flange, making it difficult to achieve the design requirements of equal strength and stiffness; During use, the junction between the fiberglass flange ring and the cylinder is prone to significant deformation under longitudinal stress, and even microcracks and cracking damage may occur.
Fiberglass flange is made by processing the flange ring and cylinder separately, and then bonding the two together. This structure is widely used and fully utilizes the advantages of easy molding of fiberglass. The mold is simple and easy to manufacture, making it suitable for manufacturing large diameter, small batch, and special-shaped fiberglass flanges. However, its drawback is that the glass fiber between the fiberglass flange ring and the cylinder is discontinuous, resulting in a significant decrease in strength at the connection. Even if glass cloth or short cut felt is used to reinforce the corners, the bending moment, shear force, tensile force, etc. borne by the fiberglass flange mainly rely on the resin matrix on the bonding surface. As a result, the longitudinal stress and strength at the bonding point are high, which is prone to damage and insufficient safety. Moreover, with the increase of usage temperature, the safety will also decrease. Relatively speaking, the flexible flange not only has the advantages of fiberglass flange, but also fully utilizes the high stiffness of the flexible metal flange ring, greatly reducing the leakage phenomenon caused by the bending and excessive deflection of the flange ring between the two bolts during the use of fiberglass flange after tightening. However, as mentioned earlier, the equal wall thickness structure still does not conform to the stress distribution inside the flange. Therefore, based on the distribution of internal stress in the fiberglass flange, fully utilizing the designability and easy formability of fiberglass performance, a more reasonable structural form of fiberglass flange should be selected.
