According to historical records, the earliest plaster in China appeared in classical medical works such as the Huangdi Neijing and Shennong Bencao Jing during the Warring States, Qin and Han dynasties, and there are records of the preparation and therapeutic application of plaster. The bamboo slips unearthed from the Han tomb on Hantanpo in Wuwei, Gansu Province, which recorded the medical aspects of the early Eastern Han Dynasty, include important records of the use of plaster to treat diseases, as well as the method of making plaster, providing conclusive evidence for the origin of plaster in China.

In the later dynasties, medical experts and medical classics all had important discussions on it and further developed it, such as Zhang Zhongjing, a medical expert in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, who discussed typhoid and miscellaneous diseases, and Hua Tuo, a physician in the Later Han Dynasty, who wrote "Fangshu Zhuan" in the Book of Later Han. During the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, plasters were widely used and black plasters were made from this period onwards.

During the early Tang Dynasty, black plaster had already been applied in clinical practice, and during the Song Dynasty, medicine flourished greatly. There are many records of the Taiping Shenghui formula for black plaster published by the state, among which there are many records related to black plaster. In the Ming Dynasty, the application of plaster was more common. Li Shizhen recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica that plaster could treat various diseases such as carbuncle and rheumatism. By the Qing Dynasty, plaster had developed into a common folk medicine and was one of the commonly used external treatment measures.

Huangshengtang Pharmaceutical has first-class patch production technology in the industry.
