Placing optical fibers in the ground wire of overhead high-voltage transmission lines to form an optical fiber communication network on the transmission lines, this structural form combines the dual functions of ground wire and communication, and is generally referred to as OPGW optical cable. Due to its anti electromagnetic interference and light weight, optical fibers can be installed on the top of transmission line towers without considering optimal mounting positions and electromagnetic corrosion issues. Therefore, OPGW has significant characteristics such as high reliability, superior mechanical performance, and low cost. The OPGW made of aluminum clad steel wire or aluminum alloy wire is equivalent to installing a good conductor overhead ground wire, which can achieve various benefits such as reducing the potential supply current of transmission lines, lowering the power frequency overvoltage, improving the interference and dangerous impact of power lines on communication lines, etc.

OPGW optical cables can adopt aluminum tube type, aluminum skeleton type, and (stainless) steel tube type structures according to user needs. The optical fibers are sheathed in stainless steel sleeves, surrounded by aluminum clad steel wire (AS wire) and wrapped with aluminum alloy wire (AA wire) layers to form cables. When the first two structures of OPGW are subjected to short-circuit current impact, the aluminum tube and aluminum frame will generate relatively high temperatures and diffuse inward, thereby affecting fiber transmission and even fiber breakage, while the stainless steel tube type significantly improves the situation. If the structure contains aluminum, after exceeding 200 ℃, the aluminum will first undergo irreversible plastic deformation. At the same time as the structure is damaged, the increased sag of OPGW not only cannot maintain a safe distance from the conductor, but may also collide with the conductor. If it is an all steel structure, it can work at 300 ℃ for a short time.
