ADSS fiber optic cable selection
1. ADSS fiber optic cable structure
The structure of ADSS optical cable is divided into two categories: central bundle tube and layer twisted bundle tube. Except for some power lines with good conditions in all aspects, it is generally recommended to choose ADSS optical cable with layer twisted bundle tube structure.
The optical fibers in ADSS optical cables are introduced into the bundle tube in a wavy manner, and then twisted in the bundle tube to produce twisted excess length. The optical fibers have an appropriate excess length to ensure that they are not subjected to mechanical loads during normal operation (i.e., fiber zero tension design), and do not increase fiber loss.
2. ADSS electrical performance
The type selection of ADSS optical cable first considers the electrical performance requirements, that is, the size of the spatial induced electric field (potential) that ADSS can withstand. The reason is that ADSS optical cable works near high-voltage line conductors, and there is an electromagnetic field in the space around the conductors. The capacitive coupling between the cable and the conductor and the ground places the cable in a spatial potential position. Due to fog, dew, or light rain, damp dirt forms a resistance layer on the surface of the outer sheath of the cable. Under the action of spatial potential, current flows between the surface of the sheath and the grounding fittings of the optical cable on the iron tower. The current heats up and causes water evaporation, forming a small dry zone on the surface of the outer sheath of the optical cable, blocking the current. When the potential difference of the dry zone reaches a certain height, discharge occurs to form an arc, which is called a dry zone arc. The heat it generates can gradually cause the cross-linked polymer to lose its binding force and form corrosion, and the sheath will melt into holes. This phenomenon or malfunction is called sheath electrocorrosion or electric marks, which can lead to cable breakage in severe cases.
The type of outer sheath used for ADSS depends on the spatial potential of the installation location of the optical cable, as well as multiple factors such as the voltage level of the power line, tower structure, wire layout, and phase arrangement.
