      Boiler for burning biomass after three thermal energy transformations

      To improve the environment and reduce pollution, Henan Sanli Thermal Energy is committed to transforming coal-fired boilers into boilers that burn bioenergy (wood pellet fuel). The renovation plan of Henan Sanli Thermal Energy mainly involves utilizing the existing or idle chain grate coal-fired boiler body and boiler ancillary equipment: blower, induced draft fan, slag extractor, economizer, reducer, dust collector, boiler control cabinet and instrument valves, etc., adding 1-3 sets of spiral biomass pellet fuel feeders, 1 set of secondary air supply equipment and secondary air supply pipes, etc., to reduce the investment cost of the boiler and ancillary equipment. Analysis of Combustion Characteristics of Wood Particle Fuel in Henan Province Wood pellets are a renewable carbon source with characteristics of huge production, wide distribution, low sulfur, low nitrogen, fast growth, and low carbon dioxide emissions. The combustion of wood chips is mainly controlled by the following conditions: (1) a certain temperature; (2) A certain amount of air (oxygen); (3) The degree of mixing between fuel and air (oxygen); (4) The combustible materials in fuel undergo intense chemical reactions with oxygen in the air. The ignition temperature of biomass fuel wood pellets is 250-400 ℃, which is lower than that of coal (the ignition temperature of coal is 400-500 ℃), and the increase in temperature is supplied by the ignition heat. The combustion process of biomass fuel is a process in which volatile and combustible components react violently with oxygen in the air, releasing heat. Therefore, the supply of oxygen determines the combustion reaction process. By controlling the oxygen supply, the combustion reaction can be effectively controlled. If the structure of the current operating domestic and industrial boilers is not modified and biomass pellet fuel is directly used, the boilers will experience serious phenomena such as black smoke, low efficiency, and dust pollution. Therefore, boilers using biomass pellet fuel require the installation of specialized secondary air supply equipment to enhance oxygen intake, enabling full combustion, effectively increasing furnace temperature, reducing emissions of carbon monoxide and smoke, and heat loss. 2. The method of biomass fuel transformation of coal-fired boilers by Henan Sanli Thermal Energy (1) utilizes the existing or idle chain grate coal-fired boiler body and boiler ancillary equipment: blower, induced draft fan, slag extractor, economizer, reducer, dust collector, boiler control cabinet and instrument valves, etc., to reduce the investment cost of the boiler and ancillary equipment. (2) Convert the coal hopper used for coal fuel into a closed biomass hopper and install an anti backfire device. (3) Install one set of biomass pellet fuel conveying, storage, and feeding devices. (4) Install one set of spiral biomass pellet fuel feeder, and open an inspection hole at the upper end of the conveying pipe connected to the closed hopper at the upper end of the spiral feeder. Install a travel switch to automatically control the start and stop of the spiral feeder motor. When installing the spiral feeder, the connection between the conveying pipe and the ground conveying storage hopper should have a certain inclination angle. In order to save the floor area of the boiler room and meet the process layout requirements of the boiler room design specifications, the inclination angle of the feeding pipe should be ≤ 60 °. The installation of the spiral feeder is shown in Figure 1.

      (5) Install one set of secondary air supply equipment and secondary air supply pipes on the side of the boiler. One secondary air supply pipe leads to the boiler furnace and the other leads to a closed hopper to ensure sufficient oxygen for fuel combustion and achieve complete combustion. The installation of secondary air supply equipment is shown in Figure 2.

      6) Issues to be noted in boiler renovation

      ① The clear distance between the front end of the furnace shall not be less than 3m. After the installation of the spiral feeder, the distance between the ground conveying storage hopper and the front end of the boiler is 1.9m (taking a 2t/h chain grate coal-fired steam boiler as an example). If it is less than 3m, it is not convenient for operation and maintenance.

      ② Biomass fuel should not be stored outdoors, and measures should be taken to prevent rain, wind, and corrosion. In addition, during the storage process of biomass fuel, the temperature of the fuel should be regularly checked to prevent self ignition caused by excessive temperature.

      Advantages and disadvantages of biomass fuel boilers

      3.1 Advantages

      (1) Biomass fuel boilers have stable combustion, fast ignition, high flame, fast gas supply, good operating conditions, and high boiler thermal efficiency.

      (2) By changing the traditional combustion method, the emissions of sulfur dioxide, smoke and nitrogen oxides are reduced, the burnout rate of fuel is higher than that of coal, and the slag discharge is smaller.

      (3) Biomass fuel is a renewable energy product that is conducive to the adjustment of the national energy structure and the implementation of energy-saving and environmental protection policies.

      3.2 Disadvantages

      (1) Due to the much lower ignition temperature of biomass fuel compared to coal, the boiler cannot be pressurized when it is temporarily shut down for too long.

      (2) When receiving a notice to reduce or suspend steam usage and temporarily shut down the furnace, the fuel on the grate must be burned off and the slag must be removed, otherwise it is easy to cause backfire and ignite the fuel in the fuel hopper.

      4. Precautions for the operation of biomass fuel boilers

      Based on the operation of biomass fuel boilers over the past 3 years, the following points should be noted during the operation of biomass fuel boilers:

      (1) Adjust the fuel supply of the spiral feeder based on the actual fuel consumption during boiler operation.

      (2) The drum and induced draft fan shall not stop running until the fuel in the furnace is fully burned.

      (3) When there is a sudden power outage during operation, the fuel in the furnace must be promptly removed.

      (4) Before shutting down the furnace, no more biomass fuel shall be added.

      (5) When shutting down the furnace, there is no need to seal the fire. The drum and induced draft fan can only stop running after the fuel on the grate is burned out.

      (6) Due to the high content of alkali metals such as silicon, chlorine, potassium, and sodium in biomass fuel ash, the ash melting point is low and it is easy to form slag, coke, or deposit on the heating surface in the furnace, which seriously affects the heat transfer of biomass boilers and even causes corrosion, affecting the operation of the boiler. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly clean the accumulated ash and slag in the furnace, smoke chamber, and smoke pipe.

      5. Cost analysis

      The transformation of biomass fuel boilers is the use of existing or idle chain grate coal-fired boilers to reduce the investment cost of the boiler body.
